Once this is performed and acceptable envelopes are generated for each disconnect’s curve, the iPDA can then be used to prevent failures and predict failure modes on subsequent testing of the disconnects switches in the substation.

Motor torque and position data is stored for each disconnect within the iPDA’s data bank. The initial reference curve is used to compare all subsequent tests on the disconnect. During testing should any part of the motor torque curve with respect to arm position fall outside the expected parameters, the iPDA will signal an alarm and expected failure mode.

Operation of the iPDA is easy. Simply attach the optical positioning system to the motor shaft. Then attach the iCOD control leads to the motor and start testing. The iPDA will start collecting data on each maneuver the disconnect performs. The data curves can then be used to prevent poor positioning of the blade in the jaw resulting in losses. And the data also can be used to used to predict and prevent incipient
failures of the equipment.
